Bolton Veterans’ Memorial

          “The Scout”

Location: Main Street, Town of Bolton, New York

Medium: Bronze

Dimensions: 7’ tall

Year completed: 2000

<Whether he is patrolling the hedgerows of Normandy, the jungles of the South Pacific, or the frozen mountains of Korea, this is a scene far too familiar to many veterans.

He is on a Reconnaissance mission. Walking as stealthily as he can, this infantryman keeps a low profile. Placing one foot carefully in front of the other, he keeps his finger near the trigger but not on it to prevent an accidental discharge of this Thompson sub machine gun. He carries all of his equipment tied down to avoid making any noise that might alert the enemy. He wears the stripes and wrinkles of a seasoned NCO. His experience tells him to stay alert. As the scout steps onto a stone, he hears something off to his right. He freezes for a moment and shifts only his eyes. He knows his mission is not to engage the enemy, but instinct tells him, if need be, he will dispatch his foe.

<This monument is dedicated to the brave mountaineers who fought and died spearheading the allied drive to push the German Army out of Italy during World War II. This monument also pays tribute to the veterans of America’s “ski troops” who in their peacetime role became leaders in business, sports, and the ski industry in America.
